I. Event Review

The annual “Cross Strait Four Regions Young Lawyers Forum” jointly hosted by the Greater China Legal Affairs Committee and Young Solicitors’ Group has been successfully been held on 13-14 October 2016. The theme of 2016’s Forum is “Opportunities and Challenges arise from Cross-border Practice” with an aim to explore opportunities and challenges brought to the legal sectors in the regions by the increasingly frequent cross-border practice and rapid technology development.

2016’s Forum attracted around 200 fellow legal practitioners from Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong. On the day before the Forum, we prepared tour to Legislative Council and the ICAC for the participant and introduced to them the structure and function of the legislative agency and anti-corruption enforcement body in Hong Kong. At the evening, a welcome reception was arranged for all attendees.

On the event day of the Forum, we were honoured to have Mr. Peter Wong Hing Hong, Deputy Law Draftsman, Legal Policy Division of Department of Justice as our officiating guest and delivering a speech for us in the opening ceremony. Mr. Wang Junfeng, President of All China Lawyers Association, Mr. Wu Guang-luk, President of Taiwan Bar Association, Dr. Jorge Neto Valente, President of the Macau Bar Association represented lawyers from three regions respectively and shared their vision on cooperation among legal practitioners in the four regions. President of the Law Society Thomas So thanked the support from different parties and encouraged mutual understanding and learning from each other among to facilitate cooperation and exchanges.

Following the opening ceremony, it is the main forum in which guests from four regions share their insights and experience. The breakout sessions in the afternoon are namely “Mock Arbitration” which has been held for the second year in a row illustrated the feature of international arbitration though entertaining short clips and sketches, interactive session entitled “Skills enabling young lawyers to deal with cross-border business including risk management technique”, and “Opportunities and challenges arise under the cyber era”. Participants were eager and enthusiastic in discussion with active interaction between speakers and participants. It was surely a fruitful event for all.
